Prof. Fares Howari


Photo Fares HowariDr. Fares Howari, a US citizen, earned his Ph.D in 2001 from the University of Texas. A water resource and environmental scientist with research, development and administration expertise, he started his career as a post-doctoral research assistant at Texas A&M University, where he developed computer-assisted models to conduct impact and baseline risk assessments for scoping and EIA reports. He then joined the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) as an associate professor, member of the Executive Committee for the Water Resources Graduate Programme and supervisor for the Environment Society. Moving back to the University of Texas (Austin), he became programme coordinator at its Centre for International Energy and Environmental Policy (CIEEP) and environmental scientist at its Bureau of Economic Geology (where he received the 2008 Texas Author Achievement Award). He served subsequently as professor and chair of the Department of Applied Sciences and Mathematics at Abu Dhabi University as well as Director of its Centre of Excellence of Environment, Health and Safety (CoEHS). He is currently professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at Zayed University (UAE).

Dr. Howari has valuable experience in management, strategic planning, administration, and creative leadership. He also worked as international environmental volunteer in Jordan, US-Mexico border, UAE, and other places. He gained a wide international experience in the area of environmental geosciences, water resource management and planning, resource development, and project coordination. He was the General Secretary of the 6th International Conference of the Geology of the Middle East, held in Al Ain, and served as a board member of the Gulf Seismic Forum, Abu Dhabi, in 2004. He was the Coordinator of CIEEP’s 2008 Conference on Water Policy and Associated Technological Challenges in Arid Regions, held in Kuwait. He organized and chaired the featured plenary session “Water Challenges and Opportunities in the Middle East” in conjunction with the US-Arab Economic Forum, in Washington, DC, 2008.

Fares developed a national and international reputation in his area of research concentration. He participated in more than 80 international technical meetings across continents. He has a broad and interdisciplinary grasp of environmental/ energy issues and their technical, policy, human and social dimensions. He published over 100 publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings and technical reports.

Prof. Howari joined GGSG’s core team in 2016 as Director of environmental sciences, risk assessment, and disaster management programmes.
